Before the move
- Number or label every box by the room it belongs in, and mark what you’ll need first.
- Arrange utilities at your new home so everything is on when you arrive.
- Pack a small toolbox (hammer, screwdriver, drill, nails, flashlight) to keep with you.
- Defrost the fridge the day before; drain gas from mowers and power tools.
- Dispose of flammables — matches, lighter fluid, paints, turpentine — they can’t be moved.
- If you can, avoid moving at the very beginning or end of the month.
Packing smart
- Don’t overload drawers; remove anything fragile, heavy, or liquid.
- Towels and pillows can pad dresser drawers; secure all bottle tops.
- Pack one box with enough dishes and utensils for your first meal.
- Keep currency, jewellery, and important papers with you, not on the truck.
Who to notify
- Utilities (disconnect/connect dates), Canada Post (change of address), and your bank.
- Doctor, dentist, schools (to forward records), and government offices.
- Vehicle registration — update your address.

As early as you can, especially if you’re moving near month-end. See our trusted local movers on the Partners page.
What should I carry with me, not pack?
